Braces for adults are much more common than some years ago. Orthodontic braces used to be primarily worn by teenagers; today almost one third of all current orthodontic patients are adults. As an increasing number of adults are choosing to wear braces, the style and types of adult braces have also changed. There are lingual braces, metal braces, even ‘fashion’ braces, as well as invisible braces such as Invisalign® or Damon® braces.
Clear or invisible braces are more common in adult orthodontics (braces for children or teenagers are no longer looking for invisible braces as some major celebrities have popularized high visibility or ‘impact’ brace,s such as gold metal and/or fashion braces) as adults look to minimize the look of braces in their work and personal lives.
Many adults are choosing braces to fix problems they have lived with for most of their lives; they want to straighten their teeth and correct malocclusions (bad bites).
Orthodontic braces are predictable, versatile and incredibly successful at realigning the teeth. Braces work in the same way regardless of the age of the patient, but the treatment time is greatly reduced in patients who are still experiencing jaw growth and have not been affected by gum disease. Adult orthodontics treatment is typically longer than treatment for children or teenagers but the end result of a beautiful smile and straight teeth can still be achieved.

Crooked or misaligned teeth can be unsightly and can create self-image problems that lead to poor self esteem and a lack of confidence. Some adults also feel inhibited about laughing and about communicating because they feel that they need to hide their teeth. Additionally, misaligned teeth can cause difficulties with biting and chewing food, with jaw alignment, and with speaking clearly.
Orthodontists believe that straight teeth tend to be healthier teeth and that there is a corresponding benefit in the decreased risks of:
Adult orthodontics have been adapted and modified for the convenience of adults. There are now a wide range of fixed and removable orthodontic devices available, depending on the precise classification of the malocclusion. For example, lingual braces are positioned on the backside of the teeth and are not as visible.
The most common conditions requiring braces (known also as malocclusion) are under-bite (lower teeth protrude further than upper teeth), over-bite (upper teeth protrude further than lower teeth) and over-crowding, where there is not enough space to fit all the adult teeth.
Before recommending a customized orthodontic solution for you, we will recommend treatment of any pre-existing dental conditions, such as gum disease, excess plaque and tooth decay.
Depending on the dental insurance coverage you have, your plan may reimburse you a certain percentage of your Invisalign treatment. However, some plans have a lifetime cap on the amount or age insurance will pay for orthodontic treatment.
We accept most major dental insurance. We’ll help you understand what your plan covers and what cost to expect.
